For wealth management professionals considering a platform change, timing matters as much as destination. Here's a framework for evaluating when — and whether — to make a move.

"Is now the right time to make a move?"
It's the question we hear from advisors, portfolio managers, and wealth management executives more than any other. And the honest answer is: it depends on factors that are specific to your situation, your clients, and your goals.
There are circumstances where the answer is clearly yes:
Your platform is holding you back. If your firm's technology, investment platform, or service model is preventing you from delivering the experience your clients deserve, that's a real problem — and it compounds over time.
Your compensation doesn't reflect your contribution. If you've grown your book significantly but your comp hasn't kept pace, the gap will only widen.
You've hit a ceiling. If the path to partnership, equity, or leadership isn't clear — or isn't available — you need to find a place where it is.
Your clients are asking questions. If clients are probing about your firm's stability, ownership, or direction, they may be telling you something important.
There are also circumstances where the answer is clearly no:
You're in the middle of a major client transition. Moving while managing a complex client situation creates risk for everyone.
Your non-solicit is too restrictive. Understand exactly what you can and can't take before you move.
You haven't done the work. Knowing where you want to go — and why — is essential. Moving without a clear destination is rarely the right answer.
Ask yourself three questions:
1. What problem am I solving? If you can't articulate the specific problem your current situation creates, you may not be ready to move.
2. What does the ideal destination look like? Not just compensation — culture, clients, colleagues, and career trajectory.
3. What's the cost of staying? Sometimes the biggest risk is not moving.
We work with advisors and executives at every stage of this decision — including the stage where the answer is "not yet." Our job is to give you an honest picture of the market and help you make the right decision for your career and your clients.
For firms, turn the market context into a hiring brief. For professionals, compare what a different platform would change.
